Due to rapid urbanization, chemical run off from industry, agriculture and private households is increasing. Chemically contaminated water can be discoloured or develop a strong smell. More often it has though no visible sign of contamination. Although it has seldom an immediate effect on the human organism it is very dangerous if ingested over an extended period of time. Chemical contaminants can be reduced by means of a carbon filter. While iodine is still the most effective chemical treatment against virus, it is virtually useless against protozoa like amoebae, giardia and cryptosporidium. If ingested over an extended period of time it can be harmful to your health. Chlorine is used in many countries for the treatment of drinking water. It is a known fact that chlorine will react with organic matter in the water to form the cancer causing thihalomethanes. Just like iodine chlorine is not effective in killing protozoa. They will both decompose quickly and can not offer a long term protection. The standard silver impregnated ceramic filters in all Katadyn products remove all traces of bacteria. For "chemically" polluted water we recommend using Katadyn Products with an additional carbon stage such as the Combi, or a Pocket with extra stage cabon filter.
