The Dr
Red Story Brisbane’s Vineyard, under the leadership of biochemist Greg
Jardine, has introduced a range of beverages under the brand name Dr Red
that are packed full of antioxidants. Dr Red Wine was introduced to the
world on 31st March 2003 . Red wine has a third of the grape antioxidants,
Dr Red Wine has 100%. The
Brisbane team took this new beverage concept further by adding other
antioxidant extracts from the Mediterranean diet, namely extracts of
olive, citrus and raspberry. Working with scientists from Queensland's
Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries they were able to optimise
the levels of antioxidants in this dessert wine. In-vitro
testing with the Queensland Institute of Medical Research began in 2003
and tested wines that were exploring what combination of antioxidants
brought about programmed cell death (apoptosis). Only when the superfoods
from the Asian diet (anti-inflammatory) were added to the Mediterranean
cocktails did in-vitro apoptosis take place. By late 2004 the
Mediterr-Asian Diet functional beverage concept was launched with the
initial testing of a non-alcoholic ginger based concentrate with
University of Sydney, Cancer Research Clinic. Headed by Dr Qihan Dong MD,
Phd., extensive in-vitro testing against 3 prostate cancer cell lines took
place. The tests showed that on Ginger Punch and Ginger FX successfully
kills all three of these widely used prostate cell
lines grown in the laboratory. Dr Dong’s work had traditionally
focused on individual antioxidant molecules such as
those found in grape skin, turmeric and green tea.
In-vitro testing of bladder cancer cell lines towards the
end of 2005 was unsuccessful with Ginger Punch and Ginger FX. The Dr Red
Team decided to fortify Ginger Punch with antioxidant extracts which are
reported to inhibit the inflammatory master switch NF-KB. Ginger Punch
Prostate Formula was then launched and is the only Dr Red product that
kills (in-vitro) commonly tested bladder cancer cell lines. Biochemist Greg Jardine managed to double the level of
antioxidants with this "prostate formula" and still maintain a great
tasting ginger beverage. When designing Ginger Punch Prostate Formula, he
added new extracts that target the inhibition of 5-alpha reductase, an
enzyme that is the culprit in converting testosterone to
dihydrotestosterone.The effectiveness of this "prostate formula" is
currently undergoing pilot study for relief of symptoms of enlarged
prostate.
