Introducing the ABLE 290 MK1 manual leather sewing machine, which is a portable hand cranked sewing machine, which also does canvas. On request, we can upgrade it to MK11 for $395
the difference being:
– fully stripped and repainted black
– Plastic handle replaced with a larger metal one
– Additional grinding of rough sections
– External thread stand
– Free roll of thread
This is an odd little hand crank sewing machine!
Vintage versions of these patchers were probably introduced in the 1870’s.

The ABLE 290 MK1 is built in China and is usually sold in the third world as a shoe patcher but I have found that it has a wide range of applications in sewing heavier materials such as canvas, light leather (up to 6mm), shade cloth and heavy horse rugs, well suited to general use, repair and rural applications.

The unit will also do harder leather like harnessing, up to 4 mm thickness.

Description

It has a wide range of applications in sewing heavier materials such as canvas, light leather (up to 6mm), shade cloth and heavy horse rugs, well suited to general use, repair and rural applications.
It is a precursor machine to the well known Singer 29k boot patcher but is considerably cheaper and more portable. Needles are standard domestic type so they are not hard to get.
What makes these machines so easy to use is the fact that the foot feeds the work and is able to turn through 360 degrees.
This makes it ideal for horse rug patching as there is no need to turn the rug to follow the patch – you just turn the foot! As quality is variable on delivery each machine (weighing 10 kg) has been assembled, modified and tested by me before sale and is great for manual sewing.
I also add a comprehensive kit of accessories that are required to get you started including:

  • Ten page instruction booklet with photographs
  • Pre-drilled mounting base that can be screwed or clamped to a bench
  • Tweezers to remove the bobbin case
  • Thread clippers
  • Spare bobbins
  • Spare shuttle (bobbin case)
  • Quality sewing machine oil
  • Cleaning brush
  • Four packs of needles
  • Mobile phone number on the machine to call if you need advice or assistance.

Important Note: This machine has similar limitations to the Singer 29 when it comes to sewing leather.
The 40 Ticket thread I have listed is ideal for this machine as it has excellent UV resistance and is very strong but bonded nylon or bonded polyester are also excellent in 40 Ticket, Tex 70 or No 69.
Also the feeder foot will mark some leathers but this can be alleviated by taking the foot off and filing it slightly.
